Sure, Instagram has been around for years. But that doesn’t mean everyone is familiar with it. Everyone has to encounter something for the first time so let us help you out with information before you sign up with our introduction to Instagram.
What is Instagram?
Instagram is a photo and video sharing app for iPhones and Android based smartphones. It includes 19 filters that are fast and easy to apply. Text can also be added to photos before being uploaded.
How Much Does it Cost?
Instagram, is a free through the iTunes store and Google Play. You can get the direct download links on Instagram’s website.
What Does it Do?
Instagram lets you quickly make minor edits (like straightening) your photos and apply various filter effects with a tap before uploading to the Instagram stream or other social media (like Facebook). Think of Instagram as a photo and video only Twitter or Facebook but with more permanency than Snapchat.
Filters are simply a preset editing style applied to a photo with a quick tap of a button rather than making the user go through numerous steps to achieve a finished style. The filters included in Instagram are almost all antique style filters made to make the photo look older. Using this type of filter works especially well with smart phone photography that might suffer from focus, lighting, and noise issues. This gives most photos the feel of older street photography.
Can I Upload My Photos Privately?
Yes, there is a private sharing option that limits visibility to only your approved followers on Instagram’s site. Note that this does not exempt your photos from being resold for public consumption by Instagram (see Copyright heading below).
What Size Does Instagram Save Photos As?
Instagram overrides your image settings for the uploaded versions of your photo in order to minimize data usage. Uploaded Instagram photos are at 612×612 pixels. This is equivalent to a 2” square print resolution, or 8 ½” square at web viewing resolutions. If you turn on the “save original photos” feature, a larger photo will be saved on your camera in addition to the file actually sent to Instagram. The size of the original photo varies by phone.
Copyright and Instagram
Instagram continues to be a hugely popular photo sharing site for many reasons, including ease of use. However, if you use Instagram you need to be aware of two very important terms in the Instagram terms of service.
Instagram can resell your photos without any additional permission from you to anyone for any purpose and you don’t get a dime. That’s right, as soon as you upload your photos to Instagram (regardless of privacy settings), you give Instagram the right to sell your photos.
Instagram gives other users the right to share your public photos. This doesn’t sound too bad on the surface. After all, we are all used to the share button on Facebook. However, Instagram’s terms do not specify HOW other users can share your image. Until a court settles their understanding of this, more and more companies are going to be taking and republishing photos without your permission. In fact, Richard Prince recently made news by doing just that and reselling the photos of others himself for thousands of dollars with nothing going to the real photographers or subjects.
