Obsidian isn’t the first game company you think of when you think of a war game but that’s just what they’ve rolled out now. Armored Warfare (AW) is a tank based war game. Armored Warfare open Beta started a few days ago, with promises of no more data wipes from the company. So what you earn now, you keep. The game is distributed in conjunction with My.com so you’ll need a My account, but that’s free as well.
World of Tanks (WOT) has ruled the tank war game market for years now, but players have become increasingly restless will poor match algorithms leading to huge differences between teams battling, a random number generator (RNG) that is more of a Loki clone than an arbiter or justice and randomness (there’s even a series of videos dedicated to the humor of what happens thanks to RNG), and an increasingly hostile and abusive section of the player base sucking the fun out of the game for everyone else.
Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian says that “Getting to make the game better based how you play the game, and your insights, is something we have been looking forward to for months and months. And, while that is all going on we are continuing to move forward creating new maps, new vehicles, and some cool new features we will talk about soon. It’s really an exciting time in Armored Warfare land right now, and for the months, and years to come.” Fans and players can only hope he is dead serious and truly listens to players as Armored Warfare moves forward.
Already, there are some pretty big differences in the mechanics between WOT and AW. Artillery reveals itself when firing, regardless of how far away they are (within some specific conditions), making it less death from above and more even in power while still adding another level of strategy to the game. Crews don’t move between tanks so there is no more dropping an uber crew into a new tank and stomping on the competition from sudden perks. However, commanders follow entire lines of tanks, so there are new strategies for players to develop with regards to skills and tank lines. There is a player vs environment (PVE) mode as well that still earns rewards for your tanks so players can relax in a cooperative environment (of varying difficulty) rather than a head to head team battle when the mood strikes. The physics are centuries ahead of WOT as well. If you’ve played WOT, don’t try to drive that way in AW. You’ll just wind up stuck, falling off a bridge, or putting a wheeled vehicle into a head stand (guilty).
Like most open Beta releases, this one is initially limited but there is still a lot to take in.
5 different classes of vehicles with distinctive gameplay (Main Battle Tanks, Light Tanks, Armored Fighting Vehicles, Tank Destroyers and Self-Propelled guns) and special abilities
60+ distinctive vehicles, purchased from two dealers, each with its own upgrades
9 unique PvP maps – battle all across the globe from the deserts of Africa to the cold plains of Russia
15 versus 15 PvP battle mode
25 PvE maps for 5 player teams – defeat cunning AI opponents

So, go and sign up. Download the game and check it out. Learning the game now will surely make it easier as features are added down the road. Plus, if nothing else, lots of things blow up in the landscapes of AW. Lots of things…and ammo is cheap.
