e.l.f Cosmetics is a popular cheap makeup brand that offers a wide selection of products for eyes, lips and face, which is what e.l.f means. In addition to really inexpensive makeup, e.l.f. also sells some makeup brushes that perform very well. As is the case with NYX Cosmetics, e.l.f. products are so inexpensive that if you buy makeup that doesn’t work for you, you’re not out much money. Add e.l.f.’s frequent sales to the already cheap prices, and you can buy a lot of makeup for very little money. The only problem I’ve had with the sales is that at these prices, it’s not always easy to spend the minimum $15 required to get the discount.
I’ve updated this list for 2016 with my favorite tried-and-true e.l.f. makeup and most popular products below.
e.l.f. Foundation and Powder
e.l.f. Studio HD Mattifying Cream Foundation is a cream to powder foundation in a compact with a sponge. There are no shades for fair skin. I chose the lightest shade, Porcelain, which matched my light-medium skin tone well. This is marketed for normal to oily skin, but I recommend it just for normal skin since my t-zone started getting shiny after an hour of wear and got worse as the day went on. Studio HD Mattifying Cream Foundation dries to more of a satin finish and isn’t really matte, and it found its way into fine lines instead of minimizing them as the product description say it will. I loved the finish of this foundation and while it wasn’t quite right for me, at $6, I recommend it for normal skin with no wrinkles.

e.l.f. Studio Flawless Finish Foundation offers good coverage for normal to dry skin, and it works well for slightly oily skin if you use a finishing powder, like Studio Translucent Mattifying Powder. If you have very pale skin, you may not be able to find a shade that is light enough. e.l.f. Studio Flawless Finish Foundation retails for $6.
e.l.f. Studio High Definition Powder leaves your face looking nicely finished, but oily spots will shine through after a couple of hours. The Sheer shade is very popular, but it made my light-medium complexion look kind of white-ish. A light hand is necessary with this $6 powder.
I bought the e.l.f. Studio Blush Palette in Light when it was on sale for half-off. Three of the shades more pigmented than any blush I’ve ever used and I had to use a very light hand with my real Techniques Kabuki Brush to avoid getting clown cheeks. This palette includes a matte light brown shade, which contours beautifully and wasn’t overly pigmented. For $6, use this popular powder blush sparingly and it will last you for months. In two shade selections: light and dark.

HD Cream Blush is also very pigmented, but it’s a cream that blends to a sheer finish that can be built up if you prefer more color on your cheeks. As is the case with many other liquid or cream blushes, apply carefully over your foundation to avoid messing it up. e.l.f. HD Blush retails for just $3.
e.l.f.’s Baked Eyeshadow stands out. This shadow glides on and gives a sheer wash of color that can be built up for more intensity. If you go for more color, use a few layers instead of trying to apply one thick coat to avoid having shadow sprinkles on your cheeks. e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadow shades are neutral with a couple of gorgeous purple shades. Retails for $3 each, or get a palette of all colors for $10.
e.l.f. Lipstick and Lip Gloss
e.l.f. Lip Balm Tint is a tinted lip gloss that conditions lips like a balm. Apply lightly for a very sheer coverage, and bit more heavily for beautiful color that’s still sheer. The Berry shade is gorgeous, and the Grapefruit shade is a reddish coral. I use both several times a week, although I could do without the sweet flavor that stays ever after the color fades. Since it’s technically a balm, this product doesn’t have much staying power, but at $2 a pop, you can afford to apply often. My lips feel moisturized for hours after using this and I’ll be buying more when I use it up.
I never used a lip exfoliator before trying e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator. Although I don’t need to use this daily, I’m sold on its effectiveness for getting rid of try lips quickly, albeit with a sweet taste that stay on your lips. Studio Lip Exfoliator is perfect to use before applying lipstick, especially if it’s matte, during the winter or any time lips are dry. Retails for $3.
e.l.f. Satin Lipstick is a new product and is now my go-to everyday lipstick. The natural shades are gorgeous (I love Touch of Blush), my lips stay moisturized and the color really hangs in there for a lipstick that is not a long wearing one.
