Knitting has been experiencing a renaissance and one of the reasons why are all the cute things that can be whipped up in few evenings. Projects that you will be proud to say, “I made this”. I can’t even begin to count the number of pumpkin hats I’ve made over the past five or six years. Even beginning knitters can knit one of these simple hats, just pick a simple pattern, some inexpensive yarn and go for it.
- Don’t be afraid to do a little altering to a pattern. Don’t change the stitch counts, but if you have a basic hat pattern that
you like to knit, figure out how to make pumpkin ribs. (Add one or two pearl stitches in even increments around the hat).
- Rib the first two inches instead of a rolled brim when creating for a boy or man.
- Try an i-cord for the stem at the top.
- Make a hat for everyone in the family for a great picture opportunity.
Here are a few free patterns that will work well. If you feel comfortable knitting in the round, that’s the best way to go. But
a simple seam down the back of the hat will make your project go even faster when starting out.

Designed for Baby – Toddlers, this is worked up on size nine needles, casting on 63 stitches and working in the round.
Apple Hat Just change to an orange yarn!
Designed for Toddlers – Small Children, this is worked on size six or seven needles. I’ve made this hat in the apple design as shown, as well as in orange to make it look like a pumpkin.
Rolled Brim Pumpkin
Baby to Small Child, this is one of my favorite patterns to work with. The only thing I might change is working an icord for the stem, instead of doing in the round with 8 or 9 stitches. If you want it to look like “seams” on the pumpkin, look at the end of the instructions for information on how to accomplish that look.
Red Heart Pumpkin Hat Pattern
A slightly different look pumpkin hat from Red Heart, works well for older children up to adults.
Snowy Hat Just change to an orange yarn!
Fits Babies – Small Children. It’s very similar to the apple hat above, this is worked on size nine needles.
A simple leaf for your pumpkin hat.

If you’re a new knitter or even an accomplished one that has several projects on your needles, this inexpensive needle set is perfect to have in your knitting basket. I like them so much I have several sets in various lengths, along with my more costly Aldis.
The price is right, I like the feel of the bamboo and the cord just doesn’t kink up or have a strong memory like so many inexpensive in-the-round knitting needles.
If you’re working on a larger piece, consider the longer lengths. The 60″ is available through prime at this time, plus the sale price of $14.95 makes them less than $2.00 a set.
*Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice in Tangerine Mist was used for the hats shown in the picture.
